Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)
What is a CPhT certification?
Most pharmacy employers seek applicants with a certification, and many mandate it as a requirement. Taking the exam and earning your CPhT certification can help you stand out among a other non-certificate holders and set you up for success.
As a Pharmacy Technician, you have several roles and responsibilities in a pharmaceutical environment. Some of these would include the following:
- Receive prescription requests from patients, doctors’ offices, and other medical facility
- Measure medication amount and dosage accurately
- Package and label prescriptions
- Establish, manage and maintain patient records
- Accept payment for prescriptions and process insurance claims
- Manage pharmaceutical inventory
Why do you need to certify?
The fundamental purpose of any professional certification program is to offer an independent, dependable assessment of the knowledge and skills comprehension required for having an edge in performing a professional role. This assessment, like any other, is typically accomplished by the successful completion of the given examination.
Pharmacy Technicians are today’s one of the most sought-after healthcare professionals, whose functions are located in hospitals, drug stores, doctors’ offices and grocery stores. With a CPhT certification, you’ll have the credentials you need to invest in your future and prepare for a rewarding career as a Pharmacy Technician – and MITS can help you with that!

Format and Content
The Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification exam is a computer-based exam administered at Pearson VUE test centers nationwide. CPhT scores are used to assess whether a participant has successfully demonstrated the knowledge necessary to practice as a pharmacy technician.
The CPhT is a two-hour, multiple-choice, exam that contains 90 questions (80 scored questions and 10 non-scored questions). Each question is shown with four possible answers, but only one of which is the correct or considered as best answer. Non-scored questions are not identified and are randomly distributed throughout the exam. A candidate’s exam score is based on his or her responses to the given 80 scored questions. One hour and 50 minutes are provided for answering and completing the exam questions, while 10 minutes are allotted for a tutorial and post-exam survey.
The CPhT content was created and developed by experts in pharmacy technician practice based on a nationwide study analysis completed in February 2012. The CPhT critically evaluates knowledge necessary to pharmacy technician practice organized into nine knowledge domains, each with a number of ‘knowledge areas’ or sub-domains, as shown in the table below:
