Medical Informatics and Management

MITS offers this foundational class to introduce interested candidates the essential concepts and principles of healthcare information technology, with the addition of specific application to treatment departments. This course program focuses on decision theory and support, computerized medical records and interactive systems.

PREREQUISITE:

Candidates should have a working foundation on knowledge and experience of either diagnostic and/or medical research laboratories that allow them to grasp their learning to the practice of laboratory medicine. And also, a course in computer information systems is recommended.

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course introduces the participant to several key concepts of the management aspects of laboratory medicine and medical research, which includes the areas of change management, laboratory information systems, intellectual property, creative thinking, economics of the healthcare system and pathology services, automation, point of care testing (POCT), quality systems, accreditation of laboratory services and legal issues stirring the practice of medical scientists in laboratory medicine. 

The medical informatics component of the course includes principles and practice of manipulating and digitizing data or information, especially done for the intention of image analysis and interpretation. The course evaluates the use and importance of information systems in the laboratory, as well as determines how expert systems can help in critical decision making processes. Understanding on the role of the Internet in healthcare management is also covered in this coursework.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the training program, participants are expected to demonstrate the following abilities:

  • Gain insights on the changing environment of the healthcare system and its function of diagnostic services in contributing information that helps in the critical aspects of diagnosis, assessment, treatment and monitoring of disease
  • Develop critical judgment of technological, sociological and political advancements in the coverage of diagnostic healthcare services
  • Develop creative schemes in designing a solution to keep up with the transition of the laboratory and wider healthcare industry, especially as it impacts on an individual’s future career
  • Become actively sensitive to the impact of laboratory medicine practices and techniques

  • Develop the needed skills required to manage and process information in a time and cost efficient manner
